Caterham (CAT)

 ‘C’ is for Caterham

Caterham

The William Garland was disappointing. We gave it two out of five in the KP (Keith/Paul) survey.

The Caterham pub is just around the corner from the rail station and across the road.

There were not many people in the pub (but there never is at lunchtime).

We sat in a window seat and looked at the menu.

Keith and I both decided on the steak and ale pie, mash and mushy peas.

Perhaps, the funniest memories of the visit was when the barmaid tried to work the till – and failed.

“This is not my usual pub,” she announced.

The pie looked good but the crust was hard as it had to be so it would retain its integrity.

Keith ordered a pint of London Glory which was extremely lively and took an age to pour.

I had a tonic water. You will be surprised how many variants of Schweppes Tonic Water there are! The meal cost £14.97 each.

We had second drink which Keith had to take back as there was a lot of sediment in the bottom of the glass.

He changed it for a bottled beer as there was no pump beer available.

Drinking done, Keith reached into his pocket and checked the times of the trains. We had about 15 minutes to catch a train.

Back to the station!

We caught the train back to Norwood Junction where I got off to change to the Overground (oops the Windrush line) while Keith decided to go on to London Bridge, change and go back to Ladywell which he said was about the same time. - “the best laid plans of mice and men…”

Keith’s train (Norwood Junction to London Bridge one stop) was 12 minutes late arriving so he missed the train going back to Ladywell, the next train got him back to Ladywell just in time to see his 484 bus leaving the stop.

He got home at 4.20pm.

I got home before 4.00pm.

As I said in my last article anyone who want to join us is welcome and we usually meet on a Wednesday or Thursday.

Keith took the pictures and Paul wrote the words
